Dealing With Hair Loss? 4 Derm-Approved Tips That Can 'Stimulate Growth': Red Light Therapy, More

Hormonal hair loss can feel frustrating and difficult to reverse, especially for women dealing with PCOS, postpartum shedding, or age-related hormone changes. Dermatologists say fluctuations in hormones like androgen and DHT can shrink hair follicles over time, leading to thinning around the crown, widening parts, and excessive shedding.

The good news? Experts say there are several treatments that may help slow hair loss and even encourage regrowth when used consistently. According to dermatologist Dr. Nina Desai, a combination of scalp care, targeted treatments, and consistency can make a noticeable difference.

1. Use A DHT-Blocking Shampoo

One of Dr. Desai’s top recommendations is Nizoral shampoo, which contains ketoconazole. “Nizoral shampoo is going to block some of the DHT or dihydrotestosterone that’s being released in the scalp,” she explains. Since DHT is one of the main hormones linked to pattern hair loss, reducing its effects may help minimize shedding over time. Derms recommend using it a few times a week while alternating with a gentle hydrating shampoo to avoid dryness.

2. Try Minoxidil For Regrowth

Minoxidil 5% remains one of the most dermatologist-recommended treatments for hormonal hair loss. According to Dr. Desai, it works by increasing the number of hairs in the growth phase cycle, which can lead to thicker, fuller strands. Consistency is key, though. Experts warn that once you stop using minoxidil, hair typically returns to its previous state over time. While results can take several months, many women notice less shedding first before seeing visible regrowth.

3. Add A Hair Growth Serum

Hair growth serums packed with ingredients like peptides, growth factors, and caffeine are also becoming increasingly popular. Dr. Desai says these ingredients can help improve circulation to the scalp and support healthier follicles. Peptides in particular are trending in the beauty world because they may help strengthen the scalp environment while supporting healthier-looking hair density. Caffeine-based formulas are also believed to stimulate blood flow around the follicles, which can help support growth.

4. Consider Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy caps have become one of the buzziest at-home beauty tools for hair thinning—and dermatologists say they may actually help when used regularly. “Red light therapy, when used consistently, can help stimulate hair growth as well,” Dr. Desai explains. The low-level light is thought to energize hair follicles and improve circulation in the scalp, potentially helping strands grow thicker over time.
