The use of lip liner is crucial for accentuating one’s pout, prolonging the lifespan of lipstick, and aiding women over the age of 40 with fine lines or less voluminous lips to detract attention from such areas.

Seeking guidance from a prominent makeup artist, we have outlined five uncomplicated steps for creating a timeless and enduring lined lip appearance for those over 40.

Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Kerrin Jackson, celebrity, film and television makeup artist and creator of The Makeup Refinery blog.

5 Simple Steps For A Flattering And Classic Lip Over 40

1. Define Your Lips With Highlighter & Foundation

On a clean face, Jackson says to "begin to define your lips by using a concealer brush with your highlight and foundation color to create your desired lip shape around the outside of your mouth." The flat side of the brush, she adds, should be "against your skin to blend out the foundation as you apply it."

2. Blend Foundation Out & Away From Your Pout

With a clean brush, she then recommends "blending the foundation you have placed around your lips out and away from your lips." This will soften the product used, Jackson notes, "yet still leave enough there to create the illusion of not only definition but also a soft highlight." This is the illusion that "helps make your lips appear larger," and also detracts from fine lines.

3. Add Powder Puff & Translucent Powder To Your Lips

Once you are happy with the "shape and the level of subtlety of your highlighted lip shape," Jackson says to then use a powder puff and some translucent powder and "lightly dust it over your closed mouth." This will "set the foundation highlight and also help your lipstick apply well," she explains.

4. Define Your Lines & Fill In Shape With Lip Liner

Next, Jackson suggests "using your favorite lip pencil" and defining your lip line "just inside the shape you created with your highlight color in steps 1 -3."

5. Fill In Your Lips With A Nude Shade

Lastly, Jackson advises mature beauties over 40 to "fill in your lips with your favorite nude lipstick, and to stay away from any shade too dark or cool in tone." These will instantly make your lips "appear thinner," she warns, and "undo your beautiful makeup illusions created already." Jackson also suggests pairing these steps "with some lip balm or even a pretty tinted gloss for a day look too." (Sounds worth a try to us!)
