Stylists Say These Are The Best Haircuts To Boost Volume Over 40

It’s time to put an end to flat hair! Whether you’re dealing with hair loss or simply have naturally fine strands, there’s a solution in sight: it all comes down to choosing the right haircut and styling it properly to give it the boost it needs. Luckily, there are tons of great options out there to add some umph to the mix and take years off of your face all at the same time—including a few variations of one classic style.

To discover the best volumizing haircuts any women over 40 can rock with ease, we spoke to experienced hair stylist Cindy Marcus from Latest Hairstyles. She told us you can never go wrong with a good old bob. Marcus even broke down two different volume-boosting options that are sure to bring life back to limp hair: a stacked bob and a layered bob.

The Volumizing Power Of Bobs

The bob is a classic, tried and true hairstyle that’s always a great option for women over 40. In fact, Marcus says it’s her favorite anti-aging style! “The forever go-to for women with fine hair over 40, for me, will always be a bob,” she says, noting that it’s a “style that can work for all hair types and textures.”

So, what makes this timeless cut so great? For one, Marcus says it’s face-framing, which is a must-have feature for any woman who wants to look younger or slimmer. “Framing the face can elongate your face,” she points out. “So if you have found your face filling out this is a great way to make your face look younger rather than rounder.” Sounds perfect! Luckily, there are so many ways to wear a bob, so no matter what your personal style preferences are, you’re sure to be able to rock this cut. Here are some of Marcus’s favorite variations:

Layered Bob

If volume is what you’re looking for, Marcus says you should look no further than a layered bob. “This style provides movement and umph to hair that tends to go flat,” she explains. This is an especially fantastic style for anyone with finer strands and a good amount of growth. However, it can take some bulk away from your hair, so if you’re dealing with thinning hair and want to create the illusion of fullness, you may want to go with her next option: a stacked bob.

Stacked Bob

If you struggle with hair loss or thinning, Marcus says a stacked bob is the perfect cut for you! While the cut is very similar to a layered bob, it features less layers, and the bluntness is perfect for creating the illusion of thicker, fuller locks. “This style does not have a ton of layering, therefore leaving bulk left in the hair for a fuller look,” Marcus explains.

No matter which style you go with, she says they’ll work best with volumizing products like mousse or root lifting spray, “Make sure you are using products meant for volume or fine hair so they don’t weigh hair down,” she emphasizes. “This is especially true with hair spray. Look for sprays
that are made to emphasize volume or meant for fine hair.”

Additionally, blowing these styles out with a round brush is always a fantastic way to create fullness. “It is also best to blow dry the top section of hair in an up and back direction to emphasize volume,” Marcus instructs. “Using a smaller sized round brush will also be helpful to create a fullness.” Got it!
