Dark lipstick can be intimidating. Well, any lipstick can be intimidating. A lot of women feel they can’t “pull off” a darker lipstick shade because it can look too harsh or goth. However, anyone can get away with wearing a dark hue on their lips, it’s just a matter of finding the right shade. Makeup arist and photographer behind the blog Beauty Is Boring, Robin Black, has found the perfect bold hue that works on everyone.

Her lipstick and shade of choice is Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Black Dahlia. How does that dark lipstick look good on everyone? Because it’s a “balanced shade” with a slightly cool undertone, yet a hint of warmth.

“I like to think of the face as a gallery and this lip as the artwork,” Black told Elle. “You make this one really strong statement and keep the rest of the face very clean.” To ensure the lipstick goes on smooth, she removes any flakes with Scotch tape and moisturizes with Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil. Before applying the lipstick, Black makes sure she removes all traces of the lip moisturizer so the color doesn’t “sheer out.”

She applies the color without a liner and straight from the tube. Black Dahlia is so pigmented that she says “one sweep and your lip won’t show through.”

If you’re going to rock this lipstick shade, it’s best to keep the rest of your look minimal considering the color is striking. Keep your beauty look all about your lips! When it comes to beauty, it’s important to play up only one bold feature at a time.

Have you tried Black Dahlia?!
