Is there anything sadder than getting hooked on the first season of a show just for it to be canceled before it gets a season 2? Unfortunately for Hulu subscribers, the streaming platform have been prematurely canceling shows left and right—including one that didn’t even premiere yet.

That’s right: Variety recently reported that Hulu has dropped the highly anticipated Devil in the White City. This announcement comes on the tail of cancelations of shows like Reboot and Kindred.

Devil in the White City canceled before it even started

While a show getting canceled after one season is sad enough, there’s something truly devastating about a project that doesn’t get to see the light of day. That’s exactly what just happened with Hulu’s Devil in the White City, which was set to star Keanu Reeves.

Variety reported that this adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2003 novel of the same name was officially abandoned on March 6, 2023. Director Todd Field chose to exit the project and Reeves followed suit. Without these two, Hulu chose to drop the series altogether.

Fans of the book (and of Keanu) are understandably disappointed by the news. “Hopefully Netflix or Amazon will pick this up. It is an absolutely fascinating book,” one wrote in response to The Hollywood Reporter’s tweet on the matter.

Reboot canceled

Star Johnny Knoxville confirmed the cancelation of Hulu's Reboot via Instagram on Jan. 30. "Despite getting great reviews and being nominated for a critics choice award @hulu has failed to pick up Reboot even for a second season," he wrote. "Pretty unbelievable."

This beloved series, which came from Modern Family creator Steven Levitan, chronicled the story of a sitcom cast reuniting for the reboot of their show.

Friends and fellow stars flooded Knoxville's comments with support and dismay. "What?!!!!!!!!! Where do I start the protest. Hubby and I are OBSESSED!!!!!!!" wrote Maria Menounos.

Of course, fans aren't very happy, either. "How dare you cancel Reboot! Seriously, why? Reconsider your terrible choice," one person tweeted.

While the news of this cancelation was devastating for many, Knoxville assures us that "It's not over yet though, as we tend to shop it around and hopefully it will find a home with a studio who believes in and knows how to properly support a new show as it continues to grow." Fingers crossed!

Kindred canceled

Here's another novel-turned-series that we hate to say goodbye to. Hulu has also officially canceled Kindred, which was the adaptation of Octavia E. Butler's novel. Starring Mallori Jackson, the show delved into slavery and time travel—but it only got one eight-episode season, which aired on Dec. 13.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Jan 30. People online were sad to see it go. "They dumped this show. Didn’t give it a chance. Shame, as it was good," one tweeted. We can only hope another network picks it up, along with all the other dropped series.
